They Call It Puppy Love! Two Malformed Dogs Become Best Buds After Being Adopted Five Years Apart

Two deformed dogs have formed an unbreakable friendship after the same family adopted them 5 years apart.

Liesl Wilhardt, 53, the founder and director of Luvable Dog Rescue, has shared a look into Picasso and Newt's unshakeable bond. Both dogs have facial deformities and live with Wilhardt on 55 acres of land at their home in Eugene, Oregon. Liesl adopted Picasso in 2017 after the sudden passing of his brother - Pablo - and later adopted Newt in 2021, and before long the two became inseparable. These two canines are now practically inseparable, according to their owner.

Picasso, who is 5 years old, was born with a deformed nose. He has wrymouth, a condition that causes one side of his jaw to grow larger than the other, giving him a twisted appearance that closely mimics his namesake painting, Pablo Picasso. The condition can happen to many other animals as well as dogs and is painless – but it makes keeping a pet that much more difficult. Liesl explained Picasso's odd appearance by saying, "Picasso's jaw spontaneously sprang up. He wasn't in any agony, according to the vet. Although it occasionally makes eating challenging for him, he is otherwise fine.

On the other side, Newt, a year old, lost his upper jaw as a result of his mother accidentally biting him.

Liesl said, “It was a miracle that Picasso survived being a baby because it would have been very hard for him to even nurse from his mother.” She added, “Newt has had many more challenges, surprisingly the bigger challenges not being caused by his lack of upper jaw.”

Despite the daily challenges due to their deformity and Newt’s medical problems, the couple now leads a very happy life.

Liesl Wilhardt was willing to give her followers a glimpse into the life and friendship that her 2 malformed companions have, through video clips of their daily activities, such as feeding and playing with each other, as well as hikes and harvesting berries. She shared, “Both Picasso and Newt adore people, so in public, they are very outgoing and seek attention and love to greet people,” and “Most people do immediate double takes and then stare at the dogs for a while, trying to make sense of what they are seeing.”

Since Newt is so amiable and enjoys playing and wrestling, Picasso adored him from the start. As Newt developed, this friendship became more intense. “I absolutely love Picasso and Newt with all my heart, they are both incredibly loving, happy, intelligent, and funny dogs.” she continued.

Picasso even has a personal Instagram account with a following of close to 400,000.

In addition, Liesl has 55 acres of woodland where she provides the ideal home for dogs, cats, hens, and even pigs. She has also saved hundreds of animals with disabilities. Some other pets include five Pit bulls named Buddha, Nenna, Piggy, Owl, and Maverick, as well as a pug-chihuahua mix named Hazel. Liesl spoke in 2017, “I just fell in love with him as soon as I saw him. He is training as a certified therapy dog and also serves as a Luvable Dog Rescue ambassador.” She said that at the time Picasso spends his days helping those with disabilities or illnesses as part of Liesl’s rescue program.
