The series is based on the novels written by Karin Slaughter. Sonja Sohn also stars in the series. The main character of this book is Special Agent Will Trent (Rodrguez), who works for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).

He is a solitary person who has the highest clearance rate in the GBI and is the best at deconstructing crime scenes than anybody else. Will was left as an infant and spent his formative years in the broken foster care system in Atlanta.  Will's childhood was a nightmare. In spite of the challenges he has faced, he is determined to communicate his point of view in the hope that it may dissuade others from experiencing the same things he has. Angie Polaski (Christensen) and Michael Ormewood (McLaughlin), both of whom work as detectives for the Atlanta Police Department, have backgrounds that couldn't be more dissimilar from one another.

Faith Mitchell, played by Richardson, is Will's new partner at the GBI. She comes from a family of law enforcement officers. Amanda Wagner (Sohn) is the Director of the General Bureau of Investigation and is in Charge of Will and Faith.
