Disney+ is now streaming Season 3 of The Owl House, and the finale is just days away. Follow the journey of Luz, a human girl who travels through a portal to the Demon Realm and finds friendship with a witch and a warrior. The third and final season of the show is split into three 44-minute specials. Part one was released in October 2022 and the second part in January 2023. Fans were taken aback by the sudden cancelation of The Owl House. The creator of the show took her time to explain the reason behind the cancelation through Reddit. According to Terrace, the show was canceled because some executives considered it “didn’t fit the Disney Channel brand”. There are multiple reasons why the network could’ve reached this conclusion. The first being that most of the audience was on the older side of the demographic. This isn’t a strange phenomenon when compared with other successful animated shows that were originally intended for younger audiences. Some examples are Steven Universe, Gravity Falls, and Bluey.

Another reason, and perhaps the most relevant to the executives, is that The Owl House had LGBTQ+ storylines. In the show, Luz falls in love with Amity Blight. This seemed to be too much for some conservative executives who decided to cancel a show that had good ratings. Terrace also shared that these decisions were all made behind her back.

Disney’s brand is more of an issue with the company than most because so much of its reputation hinges on perceived family friendliness. For a long time there were no R-rated shows or movies on Disney+, and after its acquisition of 20th Century Fox, there is still some question of how it intends to develop adult-oriented content such as the Alien and Predator franchises. None of that applies to The Owl House, which is aimed squarely at family audiences and younger viewers. But its unique content -- very much a part of what has earned it so much praise -- steps outside its parent company’s perceived comfort zone.

Terrace’s statement stipulates that the decision to cancel the show likely wasn’t based on its LGBTQ+ content. Rather, she cited its serialized content -- aimed at audiences younger than Disney+ wanted -- as the reasoning, claiming it came down to subjective taste rather than anything concrete, such as ratings. The allegations, if true, are certainly supportable. The idea of Disney+ skewing older is patently absurd as the service includes copious Disney Junior content specialized for the very young, while its popular line of Marvel Cinematic Universe programming is almost uniformly serialized.
