#1. Lulu the pot-bellied pig

In 1998, Lulu was staying with her owner's friend Jo Ann Altsman in Pennsylvania, when Jo Ann suffered a heart attack. Lulu sensed something was wrong and ran out of the house, lying down on the road and playing dead to get the attention of passing drivers. One driver stopped and followed Lulu to the house, where he found Jo Ann and called for help. Thanks to Lulu's quick thinking, Jo Ann survived and recovered.

In 2009, Willie was a pet parrot of Megan Howard in Denver, Colorado. Megan was babysitting a two-year-old girl named Hannah, who was eating a pop tart. Willie noticed that Hannah was choking and started screaming "Mama, baby!" repeatedly. Megan heard Willie's cries and rushed to Hannah, who was turning blue. She performed the Heimlich maneuver and dislodged the pop tart from Hannah's throat. Willie's alertness saved Hannah's life.
#3. Cher Ami the pigeon

In 1918, Cher Ami was a carrier pigeon of the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War I. He was assigned to deliver messages from the front lines to the headquarters. On October 4, he carried a crucial message from a group of 194 American soldiers who were trapped behind enemy lines and under friendly fire. Despite being shot in the chest and leg, Cher Ami managed to fly 25 miles in 25 minutes and deliver the message, which stopped the shelling and saved the lives of 77 soldiers.

In 2009, Mila was a trained beluga whale at the Polar Land Aquarium in Harbin, China. She was performing in a diving competition with human divers, when she noticed that one of them, Yang Yun, was having trouble returning to the surface due to leg cramps. Mila sensed Yang Yun's distress and gently pushed her up to the surface with her nose, saving her from drowning.

In 2007, Khan was a newly adopted dog of Catherine Svilicic in Australia. He was playing with Catherine's 17-month-old daughter Charlotte in their backyard, when he noticed a venomous king brown snake near them. Khan quickly grabbed Charlotte by her diaper and threw her out of harm's way, before being bitten by the snake himself. Khan survived after receiving an anti-venom injection, and became a hero for protecting Charlotte.

In 1996, Binti Jua was a female gorilla at the Brookfield Zoo in Illinois. She was in her enclosure with her own baby Koola, when a three-year-old boy fell into the moat that separated them from the visitors. The boy was unconscious and bleeding from his head. Binti Jua gently picked up the boy and carried him to a door where zookeepers could reach him. She also protected him from other gorillas that were curious about him. The boy recovered from his injuries and Binti Jua received worldwide praise for her maternal instincts.

In 2007, Toby was a pet dog of Debbie Parkhurst in Maryland. Debbie was eating an apple at home, when she choked on a piece of it and fell to the floor. Toby saw Debbie struggling to breathe and jumped on her chest repeatedly, dislodging the apple from her windpipe. Toby then licked Debbie's face to keep her from passing out.

In 2007, Winnie was a pet cat of Eric and Cathy Keesling in Indiana. They were sleeping in their bedroom, when Winnie smelled a gas leak from their basement furnace. Winnie started meowing loudly and scratching their door until they woke up. They followed Winnie downstairs and discovered the gas leak, which could have caused an explosion or carbon monoxide poisoning if left unchecked.

In 2008, Moko was a wild bottlenose dolphin that frequented Mahia Beach in New Zealand. He befriended two pygmy sperm whales, a mother and a calf, that were stranded on the beach and unable to find their way back to the sea. Moko communicated with the whales and led them through a channel to deeper water, where they swam free. Moko's intelligence and compassion saved the whales from being euthanized.

In 2001, Roselle was a guide dog of Michael Hingson in New York. They were working on the 78th floor of the World Trade Center's North Tower, when the first plane hit the building on September 11. Roselle calmly led Michael and 30 other people down 1,463 stairs to safety, despite the smoke, dust, and noise. Roselle also helped Michael find a subway station and a friend's house, where they stayed until the next day. Roselle's bravery and loyalty helped Michael survive one of the worst tragedies in history.
